The Mission of the Lorain County Labor Agency is to improve the work and family lives of our citizens through advocacy, education and information.
Our Vision is to strengthen the community by focusing the resources, strengths, diversity and commitment of the labor movement in Lorain County.
Community Awareness Network (C.A.N.)
The C.A.N. workshops are designed to educate and inform the community on issues and resources that affect the day to day life of citizens within our community including but not limited to dislocated workers, students and seniors. This is done with the nonprofit community, labor community and general public
Labor Leaders Breakfast
Quarterly breakfast for leaders in the community to meet, share information and learn about a community issue from expert speakers. This breakfast meeting generally brings 35 to 55 labor representatives, community members and friends of labor.
EITC Coalition
Provide free income tax preparation for low income residents allowing them to file for Earned Income Credit that will give higher refunds and put money back into the community. The labor agency preformed 264 free tax returns from Feb 09 – May 09.
Voter Participation and Education
Organized labor’s role in the election process is well documented. With this in mind, the Labor Agency will encourage voter participation and provide education about community issues. Citizens of Lorain County should realize that everyone has a right to vote on what happens in their community and that by voting, they are voicing their wishes and needs. We encourage all C.A.N. participants to register if they are not registered and to vote on Election Day and provide registration forms for their convenience.
Homeless Task Force
Staff sits on homeless task force committee to add input to community resources, report on labor agency activities, and sit on allocation committee for distribution of federal monies.
Labor Day Family Celebration Committee
Staff sits on this committee and chairs the committee for kids events. Involved in this project since its inception in 1994.
Thanksgiving basket/boxed meal distribution
Board and staff collect food and money that provides food distribution to those in need for Thanksgiving. This is done through the nonprofit organization LEAP CIL and the Labor Agency. Both organizations provide names of recipients.
Great Lakes Organized Labor Management Council
Annual Scholarship Joe Harrell Golf Classic
Labor Agency staff and board works with the staff of GLOLMC to put on this event that provides scholarship to labor members attending LCCC.
Lorain County Furniture Bank Referring Agency
The Lorain County Labor Agency is a referring agency for the Lorain County Furniture Bank. This means that residents, who need furniture, call the agency, tell the agency what they need and the agency fills out a furniture request and sends it by fax to the furniture bank.
NAMI Lorain County
The Lorain County Labor Agency provides administrative support to NAMI and shares office space. This provides income for the agency and gives the agency a collaboration with NAMI.
Database, Information and Referral and Advocacy
The Lorain County Labor Agency has an Access database that they update and maintain. The database provides information on available services for our clientele. Labor Agency staff maintains the Network of Care Website hosted by the Lorain County Board of Mental Health.
